Democracy vs. demography: Rethinking politics and the people as debate

Rise of populist politics in the 21s century calls scholars and politicians alike to reflect upon question how democracy have been understood. Drawing on theory hegemony, this article establishes a distinction between ‘demography’ as key line conceptualization politics. It highlights central misunderstanding at core demonization populism: For radical democratic theory, ‘the people’ is not demographic, socio-economic, or historically sedimented category tied some characteristics, but performative process ‘being’ ‘becoming’ self-consciously enacted polity. This statement challenges taken-for-granted status subjectivities political struggle links approach other contemporary discussions politics, democracy, populism. After discussing anti, neo post-foundational theoretical accounts populism reveal dimension representation, emphasizes action performativity over static categories models characteristic realism system approaches.
